Bajawa, Flores: Where Culture and Coffee Thrive
Located in the Ngada district on Flores Island, Bajawa is renowned for its rich culture and exceptional coffee. In this matrilineal society, women often own and manage coffee farms, passing land and tradition through generations.
Coffee thrives in the region’s volcanic, loamy soil, enriched by nearby volcanoes Inerie, Ebulobo, and Wawomudha. Nearly every household grows coffee, and shared pulpers help maintain high parchment quality.
More than a crop, coffee is a symbol of hospitality—guests are always welcomed with a hot cup. In 2024, Sucafina partnered with the community to open a new processing facility, now producing washed, honey, natural, and anaerobically fermented coffees alongside the traditional wet-hulled style.
Surrounded by cultural treasures like Bena and Waerebo villages and natural wonders like Kelimutu Lake, Bajawa offers a truly unique origin story in every cup.
